Many years ago, I became aware of all the toxins that surround us. In the air, the food and drink we consume and what we put on our skin. It seemed really difficult at the time to find eco friendly products like skin cream and household cleaners that were local and affordable. So, when I came across a business called Wikaniko, I decided to join. It is an MLM business but I've not pushed it down that line. I have a few customers and put in an order about every 6 weeks. It helps cover the postage and some of my order.

So, fast forward a few years and we are in a full blown climate crisis. It really does feel quite scary when becoming fully aware of our predicament. I now have 2 young Grandchildren and felt I needed to do so much more that what I was doing.
So here's a list of what I've started doing over the last 18 months.
Buy an organic veg box weekly
Buy as plastic free as possible, recycle what plastic I can and eco-brick what can't be recycled
Stopped buying what isn't essential
Buy what I need second hand or from freecycle / FB free-up groups
Walk more. Do litter picks. Wash and recycle cans and bottles I collect
Cook more from scratch - jams, chutneys and meals. Make meusli and granola etc.
Compost all food waste and about 80% of garden waste in a hotbin composter
Stopped dyeing my hair (hardest thing to give up!)
Stopped wearing makeup
Use shampoo and body soap bars. Make apple scrap vinegar for hair rinse.
Buy 5L containers of Bio-d washing up liquid and decant into smaller bottle
Changed to renewable energy supplier
Changing insurers to ethical companies when renewal due
I've personally gone vegetarian since July last year and some days are fully plant based (no dairy)
Husband and son eat more veggie meals and the meat they do have is mostly local and free range
No long distant flying and no plans to fly again for a while (last short flight July 2019)
I'm sure that there are other little things I do but I hope this list inspires you to make a start or add to what you already do. Make one change at a time and build on it. Help others do the same. Lots of little actions will add up and make waves. We can influence the big companies by how we buy, what we buy and who from. Make your choices as ethical as possible. Do your research. Ask questions.
